Future bright again for Gold

BIRMINGHAM chairman David Gold wants to deliver promotion to ease “traumatic” memories of last term when angry City fans turned on him.

He considered selling up after relegation from the Premier League sparked ugly scenes at St Andrews.Supporters invaded the pitch, broke goalposts and hurled abuse at Gold, 72, and fellow joint majorityshareholder David Sullivan following their final game with Blackburn.

But City’s hierarchy stayed and boss Alex McLeish has guided the team to second in the Championship.

Gold hopes they take a huge step towards bouncing back tonight when

leaders Wolves visit in a crunch Midlands derby. “Relegation was a traumatic time for me,” said Gold, who helped save the club from bankruptcy in 1993.

“I couldn’t believe the crowd would turn on me. Maybe I took it too much to heart.

“Fans look for scapegoats and sometimes it’s the manager but I was shocked it was me.

No one was feeling the pain of relegation more than me.

“I felt maybe my time had passed and I would be looking for pastures new but the day after going down was the end-of-season dinner.

I got a warm reception, which made me reconsider.” BIRMINGHAM: Taylor, Carr, Jaidi, Ridgewell, Murphy, Larsson, Carsley, Bowyer, Bouazza, Phillips, Jerome.
